Monument record 1554/1/2 - Slag heap/possible round barrow on the NE slope of Eddisbury

Please read our .

Summary

A mound on the north east slope of Eddisbury Hill was initially identified as a round barrow. A field survey in 1978 found shale inclusions in the body of the mound and a nettle covered depression immediately to the south of it, suggesting that the mound is a slag heap of a coal mine. Extensive small- scale coal mining was carried out on Macclesfield Common from 16th to 20th centuries. The proximity of numerous other similar mounds in the area makes it likely that the site is a slag heap.
