Full Description
Possible round barrow. 13m diam x 1m high, on the NE slope of Eddisbury Hill. Field survey in 1978 found shale inclusions in the body of the mound & a nettle covered depression immediately to the south of it, suggesting that the mound is a slag heap of a coal mine. Extensive small- scale coal mining was carried out on Macclesfield Common from 16th to 20th centuries (1). Proximity of numerous other similar mounds in the area makes it likely that the site is a slag heap (2).
