Monument record 1629 - Large mound positioned to the NW of Knight's Low

Please read our .

Summary

Large mound north west of Knight's Low. In 1810, Marriott described it as 'a large hillock of the finest form...evidently not the production of nature, but of artificial formation. Its figure is that of a half-spere, though considerably broader in the horizontal, than the vertical diameter, which is 100 paces...no interpretation remains for it but that of having been a barrow or ancient sepulcre.' In 1978 the mound was located. Its large size means that it is either an exceptional monument, which seems unlikely, or that it is natural. 1988 survey concludes this is a natural feature.
