Summary

A round barrow, excavated in advance of destruction by sand quarrying in 1967. The barrow had a substantial quarry ditch and contained a series of cremations (not in any containers). At the centre was a horizontal plank of carbonised wood. One plain fragment of pottery was also found. Round barrows are a type of burial mound, particularly used in the Bronze Age. Mounds of earth and stone were placed over a burial or cremation. A single barrow could be re-used for several later burials.

Full Description

A round barrow, excavated by D. Bethell, in advance of destruction by sand quarrying, in April 1967. The barrow had a substantial quarry ditch and contained a series of in-urned cremations (1). There were at least 5 in- urned cremations and at the centre was a horizontal plank of carbonised wood (2). One plain sherd was also found (3). The finds were at Keele University (4).
