Please read our .

Summary

A Bronze Age round barrow. It was originally capped by pine trees of which only one survives. The barrow is thought to be so damaged by the loss of pine trees and replanting and fencing in recent years that little if anything now exists. Round barrows are a type of burial mound, particularly used in the Bronze Age. Mounds of earth and stone were placed over a burial or cremation. A single barrow could be re-used for several later burials.

Full Description

A Bronze Age round barrow. There is some confusion over this site. Ref 1 notes a possible tumulus N of Capesthorne Park at SJ 842739 amd a mound called Soldiers Tump, found in 1978 at SJ 84167393. It is not clear whether these refer to the same site (1). Ref 2 reports a mound called Sodger's Hump at SJ 842739 and describes a round earthen mound on a large natural knoll in pasture land, 65m in diam and 2m high. It was originally capped by pine trees of which only one survives (2). Barrow thought to be so damaged by loss of pine trees and replanting and fencing in recent years that little if anything now exists (4).
