Full Description
A medieval pit was recorded during archaeological investigations at Hunter Street in advance of the construction of the Odeon Cinema in the 1930s. Although the focus of the investigation was very much on the Roman evidence, a single pit containing a substantial amount of medieval material including 14th century leather shoe fragments, pieces of large coarse ware pitchers and oak boards possibly used as lining for the pit. A small quantity of animal bone, from a young pig was also encountered.
In addition, a medieval decorated floor tile, of a probable 14th century date was also encountered as in the top soil of the excavation. (1)
