Full Description

<1> Sainter J D, 1878, Scientific Rambles Round Macclesfield, /148 (Book). SCH2964.

Knight's Low, a possible burial mound. A conical hill about 250 ft. Its summit forms a rounded platform and some obscure traces of stone and earthworks (probably the remains of a cairn), are visible on the surface. Sainter suggests that this was the burial place of a Saxon chief.

<2> Lancashire & Cheshire Antiquarian Society, 1883 -, Transactions of the Lancashire & Cheshire Antiquarian Society, 54/16-17 Middleton T 1939 (Journal/Periodical). SCH3293.

Knight's Low is traditionally said to be the burial place of Piers Legh, who died of wounds received at the battle of Agincourt.

<3> Ordnance Survey, 1870-1982, Ordnance Survey Archaeological Record Card, SJ98SE2/1962 (Index). SCH2487.

No distinct remains of the mound were found in 1962.

<4> Longley D, 1977-1978, Longley Archive, /no.56 1977 (Paper Archive). SCH2005.

In 1977, the summit was recorded as being disturbed, possibly by stone extraction. This stone debris is thought to have been mistaken as a cairn but is probably not a cairn at all.

This monument was visited four times between 07/05/2005 to 27/09/2014 as part of a programme of scheduled monument condition monitoring undertaken by Peak District National Park. The site is described as sitting in managed, mixed coniferous and deciduous woodland. A comment is made that it has been wrongly located by Historic England and in fact lies east of a path in a wide 'ride', however, the corrected grid reference given (SJ 9605 8157) is clearly also wrong as it locates the monument some distance to the west outside of Knightslow Wood. The monument is described as having a mature scots pine and a mature oak tree growing on on its top it is considered that their roots will have penetrated the barrow. Subsequent visits in 08/03/2008, 11/06/2011 and 27/09/2014 state the condition of the monument as unchanged.
