Summary

The Lantern at Lyme Park is a Belvedere. It was built in the 16th century but re erected in 1727 when a new base was added. It is now 3 storey with an octagonal spire. The lower storeys have pink sandstone dressings and the upper storey is buff sandstone. Belvederes are turret shaped rooms added to the top of existing buildings or built especially to provide viewing areas for the surrounding landscape. They date mostly from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Full Description

The Lantern, Lyme Park. Belvedere, upper storey and spire c.1580 but moved; lower storeys c.1700. Lower 2 storeys, coursed squared buff sandstone rubble with pink sandstone dressings. Upper storey ashlar buff sandstone. 3 storey and octagonal spire. Second storey visible as lantern/bellcote above north gatehouse at Lyme Park in painting of 1640, Removed when scrolled pediment added (1). The Tower of Lantern, the top of which is 16thC, re- erected here 1727 (2).
