Summary

This Bronze Age Round Barrow is a Scheduled Monument. Examination of the spoil from a home guard trench through a round barrow uncovered a cremation burial with fragmentary pottery.The pottery is probably part of an urn. The site is now encircled by housing development.

Full Description

Bronze Age cremation burial. 19 small fragments of pottery & a small quantity of calcined bones were recovered in 1973 from the spoil of a Home Guard trench running through a round barrow on a knoll north of Beech Hall. Pottery is coarse, lightly gritted, with a red oxidised exterior & a black interior. 3 sherds have a decoration of impressed dots. Probably part of a collared urn

Mound is 1-1.30m high, 15m diam with a definite hollow on top to E of the centre, 2m wide & 0.4m deep, presumably where disturbance took place. Several tall trees on mound to W, 3 on E side have been chopped down & stumps burnt
