Summary

A Bronze Age barrow at Ginclough is a Scheduled Monument. It is a turf covered round barrow on a small terrace on a southwest facing slope. An undocumented investigation of the barrow's centre has left a hollow 4m in diameter and 0.3m deep, approached by shallow trench from the south west Round barrows are a type of burial mound, particularly used in the Bronze Age. Mounds of earth and stone were placed over a burial or cremation. A single barrow could be re-used for several later burials.

Full Description

Bronze Age barrow at Ginclough (1). A turf covered round barrow, 22m diam x 1.4m high (2). Located on a small terrace on a SW facing slope. Disturbed on SE face where side has a stepped profile with hollow. Slight hollow on top of mound. Under 2m in height & approx 20m in diam (3). Bowl barrow originally c18m in diameter, now 22m x 20m, on a slight knoll on the hillside. 0.5m high upslope & 1.6m downslope. Sides probably ploughed over. Central pit may be an undocumented excavation but otherwise mainly intact. Sketch plan at 1:200 (6).
