Summary

Bronze Age round barrow at Bearhurst, excavated in the 1960's is a Scheduled Monument. The mound was 22 metres across and 1.5 metre high. A cremation in a Collared urn, covered by round based vessel was found. This stood in an ash-filled cremation pit. A quantity of flint material from the body of the mound was recorded including a crude leaf- shaped arrowhead. Round barrows are a type of burial mound, particularly used in the Bronze Age. Mounds of earth and stone were placed over a burial or cremation. A single barrow could be re-used for several later burials.

Full Description

Bronze Age round barrow at Bearhurst, excavated by G.Rowley and D. Bethell in 1965-6. Mound 22m diam x 1.5n high. Cremation in Collared urn, covered by round based vessel. The cinerary urn stood in an ash-filled cremation pit. Amongst a quantity of flint material from the body of the mound was a crude leaf- shaped arrowhead. This and the 2 urns are now in the Grosvenor (1) + (2). One of the urns was of Peterborough type, the other was of tripartite form, consisting of a collar, an almost vertical centre section & an incurving lower third part, leading to a very narrow flat base or foot. The rim has zig-zag cord impressions & the collar, diagonal cord decoration in alternate panels. The arrowhead is of petit-tranchet type (3). The other finds of human bone, flint and pottery fragments are at Keele University (4). Site is tree- capped and crossed by field boundary (2). Site excavated 1965- 6, not 1955-6 as given in ref 2.
