Summary

A Bronze Age burial mound south-east of Capesthorne Hall. Round barrows are a type of burial mound, particularly used in the Bronze Age. Mounds of earth and stone were placed over a burial or cremation. A single barrow could be re-used for several later burials. It is a Scheduled Monument.

Bronze Age burial mound south-east of Capesthorne Hall. 17m in diameter and 1.5m high.

Sainter mentions two tumuli in Capesthorne Park. The second is possibly CHER 1352.

Barrow situated in coppiced wood, approximately 18 metres in diameter north-south, about the same west-east, but with slight tailing off downhill on the south-west. 2-2.2m in height. One tall tree, approximately 20m high on summit of barrow and two other trees on south-western edge of mound. Some disturbance from rabbit holes.

The monument is a bowl barrow located on a local high point in woodland 450m south-east of Capesthorne Hall. It includes an earthen mound measuring 20m in diameter and up to 2m high.

The Bronze Age round barrow, centred at SJ 8451 7257, is visible as an earthwork mound on historic aerial photography but is obscured by tree cover on the latest 2010 vertical imagery. It was mapped as part of the Cheshire National Mapping Programme project and measures approximately 17.5 metres in diameter. The barrow appears to have been respected by post medieval ploughing (see 9-10).
