Summary

This turf-covered cairn is a Scheduled Monument. It has been mutilated by ploughing and the top has been disturbed, exposing stones. It was partly excavated in 1962 when a small number of secondary cremations were found, but not the primary burial. The cairn was found to be composed mainly of river cobbles, and these have since been robbed for the farmyard. It is a Scheduled Monument. Round barrows are a type of burial mound, particularly used in the Bronze Age. Mounds of earth and stone were placed over a burial or cremation. A single barrow could be re-used for several later burials.

Full Description

A turf-covered cairn. Mutilated by ploughing & the top has been disturbed, exposing stones. Maximum diam 24m & height upto 1.4m. Partly excavated in 1962 by James Forde-Johnston of Manchester University. A small number of secondary cremations were found, but not the primary burial (1). Excavations involved 2 sections. The cairn was found to be composed mainly of river cobbles, since robbed for farmyard. Mound 100yds daim, but one side quarried (2). Mound of irregular shape, 18m diam E-W 7 14m diam N-S, ranging from 1-1.5m high, but with hollow on top of 0.2m. On the north side is a definite dipat the position of the excavation trench & a tree disturbance to the NW. A badger sett on the SE slope has caused some disturbance 1m square & there are rabbit holes & cattle wear around the S of the mound & at the top, where the farmer positions a water tank (3). As Above. Turf covered oval mound of stones max.1.6m high and 23.5m by 18m in area.Central hollow of 7m diameter and 0.3m in depth with water trough.To N is a shallow depression indicating site of limited excavation in 1962(6).
