Full Description

A Bronze Age urn was found c.1839, in cutting the railway through Wilmslow, c. 100 yards from Wilmslow station. Urn contained calcined bones and a fragment of a small bronze dagger (1). Refs 2 & 3 refer to a single dagger blade found at Wilmslow with a single chevron on it. It had been attached to its handle by two pegs or rivets, the holes for which were broken away. Rev. Colston obtained the dagger and presented it to Thomas Bateman's museum in Middleton. This is probably the same find (2) & (3). Finds were possibly sold by Sotheby's in 1893 as part of theBateman collection. Present location unknown (4). JBAA suggests the dagger looks more like "a tanged spearhead with collar" (1). On the OS Map is marked the possible west end of a barrow which may have contained this burial and [1493/0/2] (9).
