Summary

Possible round barrow recorded here. Reported to be surrounded by a ditch, with a standing stone in the same field. It is in a disturbed area with a heavy concentration of brick fragments. An excavation in 1906 by the Manchester Classical Association relates the mound to a brickworks. Round barrows are a type of burial mound, particularly used in the Bronze Age. Mounds of earth and stone were placed over a burial or cremation. A single barrow could be re-used for several later burials

Full Description

Possible tumulus, 12 yards in circumference & 2 yards high, situated a short distance above Toothill enclosure (RN:1570), when ascending Dirty Gate, in a field to the left. Immediately on its north side is a pool. The mound has not been disturbed (1). Reported to be surrounded by a ditch, with a standing stone in the same field (2). OS report an artificial mound, situated alongside Brick kiln Wood, 11m in diam x 0.7m high. It is in a disturbed area with a heavy concentration of brick fragments. It is probably associated with an old brickworks (3). Ref 4 reports an excavation in 1906 by the Manchester Classical Association which related the mound to a brickworks. Tom Clare gives grid ref SJ97057227 (4). 1988 survey reported amorphous mound on hillside, densely covered in conifers (7).
