Summary

This Grade II listed building, originally a seventeenth-century farmhouse with additions from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, has been converted into a cottage. It features a mix of timber framing and brick, with a stone-slate roof and two brick chimneys. The L-shaped layout includes a brick addition in the corner. The front has three bays, with small timber frames and brick infill on the right, and a central gabled brick porch. Inside, the timber framing is mostly intact. The cottage has one-room accommodation with chamfered ceiling beams. One room was previously a shippon (barn) with ceiling slots for cow stalls. Wood was in plentiful supply as a building material in Britain until the seventeenth-century. It was therefore the most practical material for house building. Timber framed buildings consist of a wooden framework (usually oak) that was infilled to created solid walls. Infill material used included wattle and daub, lath and plaster, brick and weather board. Brick nogging, (brick infill) was often used in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to replace earlier wattle and daub or lath and plaster infill as it was longer lasting.
