Summary

Grade II* listed farmhouse. It has early 17th century origins and was extended in the later 17th century. Unusually it has nearly all its exterior intact and a remarkable amount of fitted woodwork inside.The walls are coursed squared buff sandstone rubble and it has a stone-slate roof. Inside there is a dogleg 17th century staircase and a fitted nine-drawer dresser under a window.

Full Description

Sowcar Farmhouse, Ingersley Road. Early C17 origins and extended during C17 and has nearly all its exterior intact and a remarkable amount of fitted woodwork inside for a building of this status. Coursed squared buff sandstone rubble. Stone-slate roof, stone ridge and two brick chimneys. Originally rectangular in plan, now T-shaped. Two-storey, three-bay front. Left end bay has five-board door under rough stone lintel approached by four steps. Stone mullion windows. Interior: Room in left end bay has chamfered ceiling beams and fire-beam. Formerly contained large brick fireplace and bread oven. Leads to room containing dogleg C17 staircase. Main room has inglenook fireplace with chamfered fire-beam and ceiling beams. Fitted C17 nine-drawer dresser under window. Room to rear formerly three rooms, with dogleg staircase. Parlour beyond main room has panelled door and ovolo- moulded ceiling beam. Upstairs a truss of tiebeam and collar visible (1).
