Summary

Grade II listed Village Cross. It is medieval but was moved to its present site in 1981. It is ashlar buff sandstone and has 3 square steps carrying a square base with a chamfered top. The bottom of the shaft is square,from which a tapering chamfered shaft rises,the top is now broken off. The cross was moved here from the end of Holly Lane in 1981 and the Victorian top was then removed . Styal Cross was originally erected in the latter half of 16th century at Shaw Fold. Standing Crosses are usually of stone and date from the medieval period, mid 10th to mid 16th centuries AD. They served a variety of purposes from places of prayer and pilgrimage to places of public proclamation. At one time, there were over 12,000 of these crosses throughout Britain but many were destroyed during the reformation. There are now less than 2000 crosses remaining, many incomplete.

Full Description

Styal Cross,Altrincham Rd. Village Cross,medieval but moved to present site 1981. Ashlar buff sandstone. 3 square steps carry a square base with a chamfered top. The bottom of the shaft is square,from which a tapering chamfered shaft rises,the top is now broken off. The cross was moved here from the end of Holly Lane in 1981 and the Victorian top was then removed (1). Styal Cross was originally erected in the latter half of C16 at Shaw Fold (2). A Saxon stone cross was placed here by the Gregs. The stepped base belonged to the medieval cross which once stood on the village green (3). Cross appears to have been moved twice. Originally at SJ 8401 8336,then moved c.1800 to SJ 8302 8387 (4). Then moved 1981 to SJ 8354 8347 (1).
