Full Description

A possible Bronze Age urn cemetery found during landscaping the grounds of Astle Hall. Several urns containing calcined bones were recovered. An account by Foote Gower speaks of 2 urns found opposite the front of Mr John Parker's house 'one of them was too rotten to be in the least preserved. Of the other about two-thirds were taken up pretty entire. The dimensions of this about 15ins high and 11ins in the widest part'. Foote Gower suggests the urns are Roman, but Earwaker interpretes them as 'Early British. Some of the urns were deposited in the Sir Asheton Lever Museum & others were left at Astle Hall (1). Urns are no longer at Astle Hall (2).
