Summary

A watermill at Bosley, east of the A523 is first mentioned in AD 1400. The present building is complete, but the wheel has been removed and replaced by a turbine and the mill pool is dry. An early 17th century map in the Public Record Office shows a fulling mill at this site. Fulling is the cleaning of woollen cloth under water by beating it continuously. This was could be done by physically treading the cloth or by using a fulling mill where the wheel powered hammers carried out the job of removing dirt from cloth.

Full Description

A watermill at Bosley, east of the A523. First mentioned in AD 1400 (1). The present building is complete, but the wheel has been removed and replaced by a turbine. The pool is dry (2). An early C17 map in the Public Record Office shows a waulk at fulling mill at this site (3).
