Description
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken in 2002 during development work at The Old Corn Mill, Smith Lane, Bosley, comprising the excavation of foundation and service trenches for two houses and a separate garage block. The site lies immediately to the north of a wheel pit for a water-powered mill. Documentary evidence shows a mill present on site from the early seventeenth century, although a mill is recorded in the area from around 1400. Despite the potential for survival of early mill remains, no evidence for use of the site prior to the late nineteenth century was identified. It seems that the late nineteenth and early twentieth century development on site, including the construction of an ice-making plant and ice store, have removed earlier structures/deposits. (1)
