Tumulus. Certified by J. Forde Johnston. [Rigg J F.I., 23/03/1964]
This is a filled in mine/air shaft. [White JH F.I., 24/04/1964]
<2> Longley D, 1977-1978, Longley Archive, no.39 (Paper Archive). SCH2005.
A regular artificial mound. Several requests to excavate have been refused. See (1). This mound, although suggested to be an infilled mine or air shaft, has the appearance through its central depression of a barrow which has at some time been explored. In view of this sites situation about a half a mile from site 35 on Eddisbury Hill, and its proximity to the area by which Macclesfield Common is known today, it is likely that if it is a genuine barrow then it may well be that referred to in the references for site 35, particularly as that has references to an excavation/opening in 1791.
