Summary

A round barrow on Macclesfield Common was opened on September 27th 1791. It contained 'some charcoal ashes and a few remains of burnt bones with no urn'. Some minor quarrying has taken place within this area and no trace of a barrow remains. Round barrows are a type of burial mound, particularly used in the Bronze Age. Mounds of earth and stone were placed over a burial or cremation. A single barrow could be re-used for several later burials.

Full Description

A round barrow on Macclesfield Common, opened on September 27th 1791. It contained 'some charcoal ashes and a few remains of burnt bones with no urn' (1) & (2). Some minor quarrying has taken place within this area and no trace of a barrow remains (3). In 1972 a telegraph pole was inserted into the mound, which was possibly a result of mining activity in the area (4).
