Monument record 844/1/20 - Roman Road - River Bollin (Chester - Manchester Route 7a)

Excavations undertaken following the discovery of an unusual feature in the southern bank of the River Bollin after flooding revealed a series of deposits interpreted as the remains of a raised causeway and possible bridge associated with Roman road from Chester to Manchester.

No archaeological features were identified during pipeline works across the southern part of the application area during 2010 (see 4). It is uncertain whether this reflects only partial survival of the road, or destruction associated with previous pipeline works and/or the construction of the Bowden Roundabout.
