Monument record 8396 - Roman column base at 35 Watergate Street

Please read our .

Summary

A large column base and capital were recorded in 1890 to the rear of 37 Watergate Street, although the column base was left in situ, the capital was removed. It is thought that the column base formed part of a tribune’s house, however, the fortress granaries were also located to the west and the column may have formed part of an eastern portico to the granaries. A substantial section of the fortress area normally fronting onto the via principalis was given over to the residence’s of the six tribune’s and one prefect of the legion, the area commonly referred to as the scamnum tribunorum. They were the immediate subordinates of the legionary commander and each tribune was provided with a substantial, well appointed house.
