Full Description

Documentary reference to a Roman hypocaust on the site of the National Westminster Bank on the corner of Eastgate Street and St Werburgh Street (formerly the site of the Mitre Tavern).

The hypocaust was given in an account by Judge W Wynne Ffoulkes to the author (W.J Williams) who noted its discovery during the demolition of the tavern. From its position it belonged to a centurion’s house (3)
