Summary

This Cross is a Scheduled Monument and lies between the south porch and south transept. It consists of a modern shaft, set in a medieval base. Standing Crosses are usually of stone and date from the medieval period, mid 10th to mid 16th centuries AD. They served a variety of purposes from places of prayer and pilgrimage to sites of public proclamation. At one time there were over 12,000 of these crosses throughout Britain but many were destroyed during the reformation. There are now less than 2000 crosses remaining.

Cross lies between south porch and south transept. Consists of a modern shaft, c.9ft high, set in flight of ancient steps, two visible.

Medieval base and plinth on which a sandstone cross with a broken lantern was constructed in the restorations of the church in 19th C. Sandstone plinth 1.3m x 1.34m and 0.09m high. Plinth has a socket hole which houses the restored cross shaft and broken lantern, which are 2.87m high.

Despite the loss of its original shaft, the plinth and base of the cross survive well. The cross stands in its original position on the south side of the church and served to remind the medieval traveller or local inhabitant of the sanctity of that enclosure.
