<1> Department of the Environment, 1971-2005, List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest (Report). SCH1934.
Plain rectangular lock-up of red sandstone in south-east corner of churchyard. Inscribed Bridewell 1827 over door
<2> Various, Written Communication to the HER, Foster A, 24/3/1991 (Written Communication). SCH3756.
Letter reporting that the rear small door is dated 1100 and that the site was last used as a prison in 1866. Manor court at Widnes was established in 1352 by Henry II Duke of Lancaster although evidence of courts being conducted in the Farnworth before that date. It is possible that the first Bridewell building of the same date was erected shortly after Yardfrid First Baron of Widnes who presided here in 1085.
