Monument record 184/0/0 - Earthworks in Woolstanwood

Please read our .

Summary

A series of earthworks which appeared to form enclosures were identified during aerial survey. It was believed that these earthworks could be the remains of the lost medieval village of Wilstaneston, which was mentioned in documents dating from the late thirteenth century. A subsequent site visit suggested that these features are part of a field drainage system and may form part of water meadow.

Full Description

350m to the north of the moat at Wood Farm are a line of eight sub-rectangular enclosures, perhaps 350m east-west and 40m north-south. The site has the appearance of a deserted hamlet. However, the area is low lying and the enclosures may represent a water meadow system.

Possibly the now lost place known as Wilstaneston and mentioned in AD 1290.

<3> Cheshire Historic Environment Record, 1990-1992, MPP Scoring Form, Crowe C, 1998 (Unpublished Document). SCH2222.

Site visited for Monuments Protection Programme in May 1998. Site identified as a steep-sided small valley, with the interior divisions being formed by drainage ditches constructed to pipe the water off the fields above. These divisions look like crofts of an early settlement. At the western end of the enclosures the Roman road (CHER:1189/1/6) from Nantwich to Middlewich crosses the site to the west of a small pond. This has caused the brook to be dammed at the point where the two features cross each other.
