Full Description
In 1296 Thomas de Aldeleme petitioned the Crown for the right to hold a market and fair at Audlem, with the weekly market was held on a Thursday (1). Although there are no historical or archaeological records available which show the location of the Medieval market, although it is likely that it was held on the site of the Post Medieval one. The fate of the Medieval market is unclear, although it may have lapsed, as a new market was established in c1660 (2). The market hall or 'Butter Market' was constructed or refurbished in 1733, indicating some commercial success. Towards the close of the nineteenth century, the market was represented by the Wakes (3). A form of market was still held in 1906, and the market rights were purchased by the town council in 1939 (1).
