Summary

A Roman Lead Salt pan found in 1993,flattened and cut into 8 pieces, although one piece is missing. Its original dimensions were approximately 1m x 0.9m x 14cm deep. A relief inscription is cast down one side and reads: VIVENTI... COPI . There are two holes in the shorter sides as well as relief moulded arcs. A penannular brooch was also found close by. The first word is a name and the 2nd word of inscription may be [EPI] SCOPI meaning 'overseer' or 'bishop' - this suggests the Christian Church was involved in the salt industry in the 4th century. The brine springs of Cheshire are known to have been worked since the iron age. The discovery of lead salt pans with roman inscriptions reveals that the Romans were using the open pan method of salt production. Brine is heated in a shallow pan over low temperatures to create large salt crystals or high temperatures for fine salt.
