Summary

Two large salt-boiling pans of lead, one with a Roman inscription, were found just north of Nantwich in a field close to the Roman Road. Both are complete, measuring c.1m square and nearly 12cm deep. Each carries an inscription at one end, one reading CVNI-TICLER and the other CUNITVS-CLER. The first element is the name Cunitus thought to be of Celtic origin. The brine springs of Cheshire are known to have been worked in roman times. The discovery of lead salt pans with roman inscriptions reveals that the Romans were using the open pan method of salt production. Brine is heated in a shallow pan over low temperatures to create large salt crystals or high temperatures for fine salt.
