Full Description
St Michael's Church is first mentioned in 1308. Until 1811 it was the first half-timbered church in Cheshire. Chancel retains original fabric (1). Low two-bay chancel has jointed crucks visible in the east gable with small trefoil window at the yoke of the crucks. Elevations are close-studded. Boarded door with Gothic head. Later windows. Three-bay nave is higher and rebuilt in brick 1811. Has bell turret at western end. Interior has much of interest including reset C15 nave roof with moulded tie beams and purlins. Chancel screen of six moulded posts and beam at eaves level, supports plaster tympanun with elaborate wall painting dated 1663. Full description (3) & (4).
