Full Description

Church of St James. Impression is late Perpendicular, but south doorway cannot be later than late C13. Also C14 work includes lower part of tower, a window in the north aisle and blocked part windows in the south aisle. Indications of a narrower C14 nave. Remaining work is Perpendicular with exception of an extension of the chancel in 1855-6. Good oak late Perpendicular roofs with moulded members but relatively few bosses, C13 chest with ironwork. Jacobean pulpit and four painted heraldic tablets of Randle Holme type (1). Longer architectural description (2). Within the church is a good, inscribed, early Imperial, Roman cinerary box, formerly in a cemetery on the Appian Way. Photograph (3). The site stands on a prominent mound, which may be partly natural and partly man-made (similar to St Chad's,Wybunbury). There is a scratch dial on the south aisle and some medieval tiles in the north aisle (5).
