Full Description
Archaeological investigations at the Deanery Field in 1935 by Prof Newstead recorded traces of an interval tower for the Roman defences. The tower was 6.85m wide and extended out from the wall some 4.43m. The walls of the structure were 1.06m thick and comprised coursed sandstone blocks set in good pebbled mortar. Two sections of the tower walls were left uncovered at the time (1)
A trench subsequently cut through the north rampart recorded a substantial quantity of fallen masonry including several blocks of mortar bonded ashlar over which lay a compacted layer of roof and ridge tiles. This was interpreted as a collapse layer for a nearby interval tower (1)
