Full Description
Traces of the Roman north-west angle tower at Water Tower Street were encountered during archaeological investigations in 1964 in advance of construction of the inner ring road. The planned works required the demolition of a length of the North Wall west of Morgan’s Mount.
Following the recording of a section of the north wall at Water Tower Street evidence of the north east wall of the angle tower was encountered. The structural evidence comprised the construction trench of the tower foundations on the north east side cut into the earth rampart and the wall itself surviving to a height of 3.15m. The wall measuring 1.3m at its base narrowing to 1.06m following two external and one internal offset courses. The internal fill of the tower comprised rubble and sand until it was capped by the concrete base of the city wall.
Following the excavation of two further evaluation areas the rear corners of the tower and a section of the south west wall were also encountered. The rear wall survived to a height of approximately 1.06m. The front wall where it joined the fortress wall measured 9.9m wide while the rear wall measured 9.14m in length suggesting the sides walls splayed out at an angle. The width of the rear wall at its base was 1.2m, surviving to a height of five courses (each 28cm deep)
A non intrusive Radar survey was carried out during archaeological investigations at Pemberton House in 1989 indicating a good preservation of the tower however the results of this survey were not excavated (2)
