Full Description

An assemblage of Roman pottery, including some Samian ware was found in 1899 in the clay pits '300 paces due south from Chester Road' (approximately 230m) on the old river bank. The stratigraphy of the site comprised a layer of water worn pebbles and small boulders at a depth of approximately 0.45m below the present ground surface from which quantities of Roman material was recovered. Although found at the same location as undated human remains (CHER 6938), they were not in stratigraphic association. (1)

The pottery remains included terracotta water bottles, cinerary urns of the Upchurch ware and a single fragment of Samian. (1)
