There is a cave cut or eroded into the rock at the top of Raw Head, and close to the sandstone trail. The opening is c.5m diameter and it descends steeply for up to 12m. Formed in a vein of soft, coarse, buff sandstone, within the red sandstone. May be natural feature but locals suggest it was quarried for the special qualities of its stone
<3> Various, Various, Oral communication to the HER, Watson, M (Oral Communication). SCH2330.
Record CHER334 originally recorded the caves at Rawhead under the name Queens Parlour, Rawhead. Following resarch by the Sandstone Ridge Trust it has been established that these caves are Bloody Bones Caves and the Queens Parlour caves are at a different location (see CHER334/2). Description (2) is assumed to relate to the Rawhead caves.
