Full Description
Information dervives from a school project written in 1986. The report, entitled 'The Dark Valley; an investigation of the history of one of the richest archaeological sites in Britain' refers to the excavation of one of a supposed group of barrows by Keele University in 1987-8. The mound had been almost completely levelled due to ploughing. Excavation revealed a central cremation, underneath an upturned and broken pot. The cremated remains were dated to 1950+/-30 BC. The central burial was surrounded by satellite burials dated to approximately 300 years later. Several flints were also found. The author does not state the evidence for the remaining barrows (1).
