Summary

Site of two former salt works. Lime Kiln Lane works and Wheelock Iron & Salt Co. Works closed after 1888 when company became part of the Salt Union. Early 20th century maps show the site as cleared of buildings and structures. The site was occupied by Cheshire Concrete Ltd in the 1990s

Site of two former salt works. Lime Kiln Lane works (SJ 749 591) established c.1790, alongside the recently constructed Trent & Mersey Canal. Site now H.J.Lea's mill. Wheelock Iron & Salt Co. (SJ 748 592). Occupied, in about 1860, the site of Lime Kiln Works and the larger site north of the canal where an iron works was erected and common salt pans heated by the hot gases from the adjacent iron furnaces. Acquired the Wheelock 'Old' Works in 1870's or 1880's. Closed down soon after 1888 when company became part of the Salt Union. The site is now occupied by Cheshire Concrete Ltd

An archaeological desk-based assessment and site visit was undertaken in 1995 for a proposed development site on land at Pochins, Forge Fields, Sandbach. The site of the Wheelock Iron and Salt Company is located at the eastern edge of the development area and ground investigations obvserved up to 3 metres of made ground here indicating the probable presence of in situ remains of the salt works.
