Full Description
A number of Roman finds found during metal detecting along the route of a road building scheme. They were found in soil moved from elsewhere on the route of the route of the road-building scheme.
A bronze bow brooch with a broad transverse head, which houses the still intact spring mechanism with pin intact. Catch-place missing. Patches of gilding or tinning visible on bow and head, not possible to determine which, as dipped in beeswax by finder. Surviving length 2.8 cm, width of head 2.4 cm. Mid 1st to mid 2nd century form.
A bronze trumpet brooch with knobbed decoration on the bow. Fluted decoration at the expanded head. Spring hinge intact. Catch-plate broken. Length 4.4 cm. Late 1st-2nd century form Photographed by S Penny, Salt Museum. Found in soil moved from elsewhere on the route of the road building scheme.
Three Bronze Roman coins. These coins were found in soil moved from elsewhere on the route of the road building scheme and were identified by Dr David Shotter.
Coin 1: ('radiate' copy) of Tetricu I (AS 270-273). Obverse: CPIV TETRICVS CAES and portrait. Reverse: SPES AVGG and figure of Moreta.
Coin 2: (As of Domitian (AD 81-96). Obverse: IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM COS XI CENS PER PP and portrait. Reverse: MONETA AVGVST SE and figure of Moreta.
Coin 3: (Sestertius) of Trajan (AD 98-117). Obverse: IMP CAES NERVA TRAIAN AVG GERM P M and portrait. Reverse: seated figure (Pax?).
A bronze Roman coin (denarius of Julia Domna (AD 196-211). Approximately 30% of coin missing, otherwise it is in very good condition. The inscription of the complete coin would have read IVLIA AVGVSTA with portrait. Reverse - SAECVLI FELICITAS and figure of Isis standing by altar and nursing the infant Horus. Identified by Dr David Shotter.
