Roughwood Works was established in the 1780s or 90s following the Trent and Mersey Canal's construction and was located alongside the canal at Hassall Green. It replaced the original Higher Roughwood Works (CHER 2259/1) in nearby Roughwood Hollow which was established in 1693. Brine was pumped from the original brine shaft in the valley bottom to a reservoir in the field (named Reservoir Field on 2) by the canal locks and across the road from the new works (1).
