Monument record 152/1/1 - Earthworks near the Catstones

Summary

Banks and ditches depicted by on Ordnance Survey maps dating from the late nineteenth century. The boundaries survive as turf covered rubble walls and ditches which demarcate small irregular enclosures. These may be a continuation of a number of linear earthworks located in fields to the east (CHER 152/1/1) and to the north where they have been interpreted in the past as a fort (CHER 152/0/1). Therefore these features may be part of a field system which predates the present nineteenth century field systems and plantations established upon the enclosure of Black Heath Common and The Cloud in July 1831. The Cloud is a distinctive hill overlooking the Cheshire Plain at Congleton, it stands at over 1100ft.

On the Cloud, to the north-east of the Catstones, are a number of old field boundaries, which survive as turf covered rubble walls and ditches. These demarcate small enclosures, unlike the field systems elsewhere in the locality. They were mapped on the 1911 edition of the OS map but have since been deleted. They survived in good condition in 1989. The 'fort' on the Cloud (CHER152/2) may be part of the same system.

<4> Sainter J D, 1878, Scientific Rambles Round Macclesfield, p.32 (Book). SCH2964.

This is possibly one of the two divisions to the 'fort' described by Sainter.

<5> See map for surveyor, 1762-1898, Cheshire Enclosure Maps and Awards, Buglawton, QDE 1/30, 25 July 1831 (Maps and Plans). SCH1106.

Probably predate the plantation/field systems in this locality which were established after the enclosure of Black Heath Common in 25 July 1831.
