Summary

A Bronze Age urn containing cremated human remains was found in February 1941 in the churchyard, when digging a grave. The collared urn was unbroken and is decorated with a herring bone pattern that could have been created using a toothed comb. Now on display in Congleton Museum.

Full Description

A Bronze Age cinerary urn containing calcined remains was found by the sexton, Fred Cartlidge in February 1941, when digging the grave of Elizabeth Clift. Location of the grave is in section C, row 11, no.2. The urn stood upright and was found at the west end of the grave. It contained calcined bones, 4 teeth & a small amount of charcoal. The urn is collared and has tooth-comb decoration forming a herringbone pattern above the shoulder. Bones consist of fragments of skull and ribs, probably of a female. Five feet away a few more calcined bones were found whilst digging the adjacent grave (section C, row 11, no. 3. On the following day another small pocket of calcined bones were found (1).
