Summary

Extensive remains of quarrying from the hard grit stone can be seen on Mow Cop. This included the production of millstones, first mentioned as being quarried here in 1585. These were cut whole from the rock face and the curving tooling marks and one broken example can still be seen. There are similar markings on The Cloud, Congleton.

Extensive remains of quarrying from the hard grit stone can be seen on Mow Cop. This included the production of millstones. These were cut whole from the rock face and the curving tooling marks and one broken example can still be seen. Similar markings can be found at The Cloud, Congleton, CHER 153/1/1.
