Monument record 153/1/1 - Tool marks on rockface at The Cloud

Please read our .

Summary

The Cloud is a distinctive hill overlooking the Cheshire Plain at Congleton, it stands at over 1100ft. On the rockface that forms the northern edge of the Cloud, in the area of the trigonometry point, there are areas of curving tooling marks. A former owner if the Mow Cop quarries believes they were created by marking out millstones. The millstones were marked out and shaped on the rockface, only being detached once virtually complete. An example of an abondoned millstone still attached to the rock face is visible at Mow Cop (see CHER 150).
