Summary

An earthwork bank, running east-west across Smith Field and measuring 160m long and 2m wide, lies to the south-east of Little Moreton Hall. There is a triangular shaped pond, known as 'Forge Pond' at the north-eastern extent of the bank. These could represent a mill damn and hammer pond. There is a scatter of iron slag in the stream to the north-west. A hammer pond is a pond created to feed water-powered iron forges.

There is a probable C17/C18 hammer pond at NGR. Pond bay or dam is 160m long and 2m wide. Small rectangular pond at the north-east extremity is contemporary. Scatter of iron slag in the stream to the north-west.

A field boundary SE of the hall seems to run on a low dam. Behind is a pond bay. This may form part of a formal garden and relate to the 2 prospect mounds, or be a millpond for the supposed mill.

(No.7) Mill Dam, SJ8345 5855 to SJ8354 5868. Earthwork bank running west to east across Smith Field. Contains mature hawthorn trees along much of its length. Its western end curved towards the south.

(No.11) - SJ8351 5866. An area of slag lining the bed of watercourse running northwards of the mill bank in Smith Field.

No.13 - SJ 8355 5869. Triangular shaped pond, also known as Forge Pond.
