Monument record 8069 - Roman road south of the Water Gate

A cobbled east-west aligned road was discovered 12m south east of the Watergate in 1933 during street widening. The road lay south of the existing street and at a higher level. Foundations for a building were recorded to the south of the road (CHER 8070). (1)

This evidence suggests the Roman street ran west from the Watergate and was flanked on either side by substantial buildings, to the north was the large extra mural baths while to the south lay a substantial linear stone building (2). Further evidence of the Roman road was recorded during archaeological investigation at Watergate House in 1959 where at least five road surfaces were identified (3)
