Full Description

Part of a tessellated pavement was recorded at Chester Castle at some time before 1780. Foote Gower claimed that he had part of the pavement in his possession (1, 2). Lawson records the discovery of the pavement c 1770, and also links this find to that of a tessellated pavement found in 1803 in Nun's Gardens, during the construction of a cellar (CHER 8049/5).

Site of this find was reported as to the northeast of the main entrance to the Castle Yard (3), although Petch expresses doubts about both these reports (4). It is not clear whether one or two pavements are being referred to.
