Full Description
During April and May 1983, immediately prior to the redevelopment of 76 - 84 Lower Bridge St. including the garden areas behind the properties, preliminary archaeological surveillance showed that that surviving patches of sandstone masonry in the basements might be medieval in date. The standing properties have been set into and on bedrock. Together with the considerable depth of bedrock on the south side of Shipgate St., this suggests that there is a sharp fall in bedrock below Shipgate St. (1, 2).
