Summary

Roman finds from Malpas. Foote-Gower reported that 'Roman implements, both for civil and sacred uses, with coins and tesselated pavements, have been discovered at Malpas, near the boundary of the Norman castle. The implements for civil purposes were fibulae and lamps, those for sacred uses were a securis and a patera. They were all of them discovered in the year 1730 and presented to the late Mr Wright of Stretton.'. Foote- Gower & Watkin considered that Malpas was a Roman settlement, Watkin suggesting a villa. It is not stated on which side of the castle the Roman remains were found but they believe the artificial castle mound overlay a Roman site. Thompson concludes that without details of the finds, their Roman date is in doubt & suggests there is the possibility that earlier writers mistook medieval objects for Roman.
